Pick Your Target Keywords and Position Your Keywords Meant for Search Engine Eyes

            Posted by @Jagadeesh M 17 comments

How do you think your visitors search for your web page? It's easy. The words you think and imagine and type in search engine box are your targeted business keywords

For example, if you own a gift site, and if any visitor type "Gift shop online", then it's your target keywords for your site that you want your webpage to be in top ten results.

Make your website with different targeted keywords that reflects your web page content. Say you have another page for gifts especially for women, then "Gifts for women" is your target keyword for that webpage, you can also know the search count or keyword strength by using Google or overture keyword tool

An important point to be remembered is that your target keyword should be two or more words in length. Most of visitors make the mistake of typing single word like "Gifts". Single words used as keywords are odd and they don't bring success.

Make sure your target keywords are placed in fine locations on a webpage. The page title tag is more important and it looks like
< title > Gift shop online, Keyword 2, Keyword 3< / title >.Missing title tag is the main reason why most of the website are ranked poor.

Title should be relatively short and attractive with not more than 3 to 4 keyword phrases and each keywords should be supportive to each other. For better understanding, if the first one is "gift shop online" then the next one can be "gift sale online". You can also try with a sentence format like
"Gift sale online shop". When it appears in search engine listings, short and attractive title makes the visitors to click through your site.

Search engines prefer web pages with keywords in headlines and also to appear in first paragraph of your webpage. While using keywords in your content use < p > tag and simplify your table structure.

Keywords in navigational links play a vital role and have its own importance to search engine eyes. Say the first column has navigation links and second column has keywords as text.

We see the pages like this

    Home Gift shop online
    Webpage 1 Gifts for Men
    Webpage 2 Gifts for Women
    Webpage 3 Gifts for Kids

Search engines see pages like this

    Home
    Webpage 1
    Webpage 2

    Webpage 3

    Gift shop online
    Gifts for Men
    Gifts for Women
    Gifts for Kids

You can see the keywords have moved down the page and it has to be fixed by simplifying your table structure, it's been seen online that most of the people simply forget to think on how tables might affect the web page for search engines listings. Follow these tips so that search engine crawls yours web pages happily

    Hey Jag,
Yeah, a much better result is achieved when you choose a key-phrase of two or more words. Targeting one keyword is very hard to do as it is too broad a search term. Also the content of the page must be relevant to the key phrase for good results.

    Hi Jag,

Its Pravish thomas back again :)
Well ur keywords r Cool but then some insight need to be done on keys
Ex: Gifts if its an online store
then u should rather go for keys like
"Buy gifts" as from my view point i target human behavior which is important.

    Thanx

Hi Pravish, thanks for your comments, your right we can use buy, sale etc, but here i just gave more importance for my visitors to differentiate the pages by adding uniques keywords :) which are more popular

And a small tip for you pravish use buy and sale etc keywords for product pages, use strong keywords in top level navigation links and less count keywords for deep links :), hope you understood why?, else let me know

Thanks again for your comments :)

Thank you for the post Jag. I have also been getting a lot out of your SEO blog, and thanks for being my "friend" on Twitter! :~) You post some good stuff, that's how I ended up here. If you are not following Jag on Twitter, you should be... http://twitter.com/jagadeeshmp

The point you are making basically drives home the importance of "on-page" SEO. (I know I know... content, backlinks, broken-record etc...) For instance, leveraging the power of CSS allows you to position your content visually, while the html behind the scenes is highly optimized for the "search engine eyes", putting your most important keywords as close to the opening BODY tag as possible. Great point. If you are still using tables for design, stop. Brush up on CSS as it is a better way (more flexible, less code). Firefox allows you to view a website with "no style", which will show you what the search engine "sees". In FF menubar... View/Page Style/No Style (also helpful in 508).

Up until now, personally, I have done everything by hand, as it gives the developer/designer/SEO explicit control over the output of the HTML. IMHO it is that big of a deal. I have toyed with the idea of entering the blogging world, but, in addition to just the time it would take on my part (I have a day job, a family, and a life in general), the CMS I have looked at, however powerful, fall well short of what I would like to achieve "on-page" in the HTML. Yes it would be possible to edit core files of the CMS but in doing so you give up the option of upgrading without overwriting your changes. My experience is that "on-page" optimization matters a lot. Spring/Summer 2008 I took an enterprise website Vurv.com (now Taleo.com) from ranking in the 300's (March 2008) to #3 (May 2008) in Google for the phrase "Performance Management", just by taking it out of an out of the box CMS, and putting it into a custom built CMS that gave us ultimate control of the HTML. There was a lot a lot of CSS use in that site to position the HTML. The site looked the same as the previous version, but the HTML was vastly different, highly optimized. Because Vurv.com had so much content (there ya go) and backlinks (there ya go again), the "on-page" clinched it. Bad code can wreck your rankings and that is not theory.

Regarding the head words like "gift" in your example, these are very difficult to target as competition is usually extremely high and the web is saturated. My latest customer wants to rank for "benches". Difficult at best and IMHO a definite low ROI for that target. I have found it much better to target long tail (or localized search) keywords because you are at least highly visible for something :~)... although your traffic will be far smaller, it will be much more specific, much more qualified traffic, much more ready to "buy". I would rather have 1000 visits a month with 100 phone calls than 10,000 visits a month with 80 phone calls. The point being... get in front of someone and make the sales contact.

On my own site, I am #1 in Google for the phrases (sans quotes) "Jacksonville Web", "Jacksonville Web Design", and "Jacksonville SEO". Have been since 2004. I have no blog, no tips, no nothing really. That was not the intent of the site, I did not make it to be interactive. It is nothing more than a "billboard" to put people in contact with me. I did however, optimize the heck out of that code, it is all on 1 line if you "view-source". Some may point out or criticize that there is no traffic or competition for those terms (Jacksonville Web, Jacksonville Web Design, or Jacksonville SEO), but for me the point is not so much the traffic, it is the ROI, the "sales funnel" if you will. The traffic I do get is highly qualified and fairly steady, and most importantly, ready to take action. People in my city call me for work. In the dawn of things like "local search", long tail has performed very well for me as far as ROI is concerned... Jacksonville has a population of 1,300,823 so a "local search" is actually addressing a lot of people... or, at least large enough to keep 1 guy doing side work very busy! When I speak of long tail, I mean at least 3 word key phrases... more specific searches that are not so competitive... even more specifically targeting locally rather than with a drift net in the ocean. I am not out to compete with SEOMoz, just my little corner of the world! :~)

Funny too (to me anyway), I have seen/received criticism online and via email from "SEO Pros" that are apparently quick to judge, telling me how lame I am and that my site is blah blah blah. Yes, I know there is a lot wrong with my site from an SEO perspective. A lot I could fix. A low hubspot grade, no canonical set up, title too long, not many backlinks etc... a long list I am sure. Don't think I don't know it or know how to fix it. Having said that, it is hard for me to justify changing anything though, as it has held #1 since 2004 for my main 2 target phrases, and it does what it was intended to do, put buyers in contact with me. For me, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Enough of my tangent... again, thank you for another great post on your part. Don't be afraid to think "outside the box" or buck the system, or push your luck... as you may have success!

    "On-page" SEO does matter.

Sorry for such a long post... I am usually the "fly on the wall".

    Jim,

Thanks for your shott comment and bio ;)

Also I hope you have read the following lines as stated in post "An important point to be remembered is that your target keyword should be two or more words in length. Most of visitors make the mistake of typing single word like "Gifts". Single words used as keywords are odd and they don't bring success."

I have mentioned < title > Gift shop online, Keyword 2, Keyword 3< / title > and not gift alone :)

Anyway hope now you are clear :)

    Wish you the best,
